Trasformare questi scarti in biochar rappresenta invece un&#8217;opportunit\u00e0 concreta per migliorare i suoli e generare valore aggiunto per gli agricoltori.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Il progetto<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ogni chilogrammo di biochar interrato nel suolo trattiene in modo permanente 2-3 kg di CO2 atmosferica: gli imprenditori agricoli diventano cos\u00ec custodi del clima. L&#8217;esperienza gi\u00e0 maturata in Sicilia nel progetto &#8220;Humus per la Biosfera&#8221;, con il supporto dell&#8217;Universit\u00e0 di Catania, viene ora replicata in un contesto simile nei Balcani, grazie a un consorzio guidato dalla Manfred-Hermsen-Stiftung insieme a Giacche Verdi Bronte (Sicilia), EcoLogic (Macedonia del Nord) e Argonauta (Croazia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le conoscenze acquisite vengono condivise attraverso workshop, conferenze e seminari locali, e diffuse ai paesi limitrofi dei Balcani e alla Commissione Europea. Le attivit\u00e0 comprendono la sperimentazione di diverse tecniche di produzione del biochar, la formazione dei partner, la diffusione di informazioni e la promozione di un sistema di certificazione delle emissioni con criteri ecologici, utile anche ai piccoli agricoltori. Il progetto punta inoltre a individuare opportunit\u00e0 imprenditoriali per piccole start-up di pirolisi in ambito rurale, e a promuovere il biochar nel verde urbano, affiancando educazione ambientale per le scuole e attivit\u00e0 di comunicazione pubblica nei paesi coinvolti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volontari e studenti europei rappresentano una risorsa preziosa per i tre paesi partner, portando le proprie idee e competenze e diffondendo, una volta rientrati, quanto appreso nei loro paesi d&#8217;origine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Il progetto punta a coinvolgere e formare, entro aprile 2028<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>430 rappresentanti formati su produzione e uso del biochar (agricoltori, comuni, scuole, universit\u00e0, aziende, ONG, volontari)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>di cui 240 agricoltori locali<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>59 volontari europei ospitati nell&#8217;ambito del Corpo europeo di solidariet\u00e0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>oltre 9.200 studenti, dalle scuole primarie all&#8217;universit\u00e0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>512 insegnanti formati<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>32 scuole coinvolte attivamente nei progetti<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>English<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cutting Carbon, co-financed by the EUKI programme of the German Ministry for the Environment BMUKN, promotes the production of biochar from tree-pruning residues and its use to improve agricultural soils and urban greenery, with significant potential for CO2 sequestration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duration: December 2025 \u2013 April 2028 Consortium: Manfred-Hermsen-Stiftung (Germany, lead) \u00b7 Giacche Verdi Bronte (Sicily, Italy) \u00b7 EcoLogic (Skopje, North Macedonia) \u00b7 Argonauta (Croatia)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across Sicily and the Balkans, more and more small-scale farmers are giving up their activity, leading either to the loss of ecologically valuable buffer zones or to shrub encroachment and higher wildfire risk. It is especially on small farms that fresh pruning residues from olive and fruit groves are still burned on site \u2014 a practice harmful to both biodiversity and climate. Turning these residues into biochar instead offers a real opportunity to improve soils and create added value for farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every kilogram of biochar added to the soil permanently locks in 2-3 kg of atmospheric CO2 \u2014 fruit growers are becoming climate protectors. What has already been tested on small farms in Sicily, within the &#8220;Humus per la Biosfera&#8221; project and with the support of the University of Catania, is now being trialled in a similar setting in the Balkans, through a consortium led by Manfred-Hermsen-Stiftung together with Giacche Verdi Bronte (Sicily), EcoLogic (North Macedonia) and Argonauta (Croatia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The knowledge gained is shared locally through workshops, conferences and seminars, and disseminated to neighbouring Balkan countries and the European Commission at a final conference in Greece. Activities include trialling different biochar production methods, training partners, spreading information, and promoting an emissions certification system with ecological criteria that can also benefit small farmers. The project also aims to identify business opportunities for small pyrolysis start-ups in rural areas, and to promote biochar in urban greening, alongside environmental education for schoolchildren and public outreach in the countries involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participating European volunteers and students are a real asset to the three partner countries, contributing their own ideas and skills and sharing what they&#8217;ve learned back home once they return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By April 2028, the project aims to involve and train:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>430 representatives trained in biochar production and use (farmers, municipalities, schools, universities, businesses, NGOs, volunteers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>including 240 local farmers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>59 European
